Captain Steven Hunter, Northern France, September 1944
When the drone of bombers fades and the dust from the air raid settles, a feeling of dread simmers in the pit of my stomach. A weathered map, a stack of letters, and a worn photograph are the only items we find in the dead man's satchel.
My brother-in-arms, Sergeant James Kelley, convinces me that we should follow the map. But I never imagined it would lead us here, right into the sights of the enemy. Trapped and left for dead, we struggle to maintain morale when my injured friend drops another bomb. He wants me.
The poignant confession hangs between us like a grenade on a tripwire. I bury the revelation that my best friend wants more than just the bond of brotherhood to focus on the war raging around us and the volatile contents of that satchel. This could mean the end of the line for us both.

I found this novella through a friend who suggested the author and setting would be one that I would enjoy. With a backdrop of Northern France during World War II, they were correct! The action starts right after a bombing and amidst the rubble, two American soldiers behind enemy lines find a satchel. The satchel’s contents set up what follows and the reader is given a little mystery, a little romance, a little betrayal, and one heck of an emotional ride!While a World War II romance, a novella, and a primarily (but not exclusively) M/M romance is not normally something I would read, this one was done very well. The reader experiences Hunter and Kelley’s emotional journey as a life or death situation forces them to choose life, to choose each other, and to adjust their friendship and their sexual identities accordingly. And, that scene in the doorway with the eye contact? Hawt. Best of all, the plot seems to be pushed equally by both the contents of the satchel and the emotional journey of the characters.
My only slightly negative or critical comment is to wonder what happened to the handcuffs. I think they may have magically disappeared. But, even as a critical comment, isn't that a fun little tease? Handcuffs? Rawr.
So, if you’re looking for a fun, fast read, give this one a chance. This M/M WWII romance may be just the thing you’re looking for!

The tension between the two characters is absolutely palpable. I look forward to future works from Mr. Brooks.
This book had me from the very first line and kept a steady pace of suspense throughout the story. The two main characters have a history that the reader picks up on right away -- the intensity is broken by moments of laughter and unexpected turns, but always leads right back to the chemistry between the two men. Not your average m/m story, these characters have depth, the story is three dimensional, and the intimate moments are more compelling and hot for all those elements. I'm looking forward to whatever Brooks writes next!
Ooh how to explain this little noir novella. Two soldiers in WW2 are sent on a mission. One soldier finally decides to tell the other one he is in love with him. Both decide to act on instinct, until one betrays the other. I can't say anymore without giving away the story! !
This story has it all a setting and time that is instantly intriguing, just enough historical detail to seem authentic, two characters that hold real appeal and seem to have a full history together, and drama and action to boot. I loved the twist and the way the reader isn't left hanging completely at the end. A very promising debut indeed, and I'm not even such a huge fan of M/M stories. I'll be sure to be on the lookout for more by this author.

The only reason I didn't finish this book in one go was because I started it too late in the evening. I was immediately drawn into the story, and found myself trying to not skip ahead to find out what happened next. Mr. Brooks hits you with a plot twist that will leave you reeling. Anxiously awaiting more of Captain Hunter and Sergeant Kelly's story!
